New website

Your old favourites are here but with new features, like this RSS feed.
We are close to integrating our previous 2 websites into this new one. Its purpose is to reflect the closer operation and integration junior and senior 2 sections of the club as we have achieved one goal of having a junior section: getting new blood from within the club’s junior ranks into the senior teams.

We hope that the new site will have all the old information and photographs and access to different sites for wider content for results, coaching links and RFU news to make it one of the best sites that there is.

The Junior site has been transferred to a new subdomain (geeks will know about this) of the club website and you are advised to note the new address. Please use this new address to find us via this changed link Juniors. We have now closed the www.casrufc-juniors.org site down.

Over the season we will work on improving the website with content that reflects the strengths of the club.

Development Squad and U17 Squad

Mark Fisher, ably supported by John Paul and other experienced heads will be looking after the new Development Squad which will effectively be next season’s 3XV. This will help maintain the participation of younger players and help them in the transition to open age rugby and enable them to gain valuable experience in the senior game from knowledgeable and skilled players.

As a very important bridge between Junior and Senior rugby will be our new U17 and as Coach for this squad we welcome back Howard Stevenson. This squad will take those players who are too old for this season’s U16 squad but too young for the Development Squad.

These 2 squads are vital for the future of the club beyond the coming season and from them we hope to blood a new generation of clubmen.

Car Boot Sales - thanks

Thanks to all the stalwarts for their assistance at the 4 Car Boot Sales this year, the last of which was on August Bank Holiday. The effort required is phenomenal to put out the cones, man the gates, do the car parking, work in and serve from the refreshment kitchen, set up, cook and serve the burgers, do the tombola and sweet stalls and pick up the inevitable rubbish from very early hours in each day.
It is worth remembering that without this effort we could never generate the income that we need to keep the club open. The club is grateful for this help.

Further social events planned

It is important for the club to have a social side: to attract people into the club house; to provide revenue for the club through primarily bar takings; to get a wider experience from being members of the club and to have a good time. We need a wide variety of events to attract a wider group of our members to the events. We will be trying to do this but for all our efforts we require members to bring their family and friends down to support them. Your participation is required and will be rewarded by sharing enjoyment with others.
We have a social event calendar on the Club page, of this website. After the Voices of the Day Choir night on 17 September there will be the VPs’ Luncheon (see separate news item) and a Halloween Disco in October, an Any Sporting Questions evening in November, the Children’s Christmas Party and New Year’s Eve Disco in December, A Valentine’s Night in February and An Easter Egg Hunt. On top of that there will be the Players’ Dinner and Presentation Day for Juniors, It’s a Knockout and the Club Open Day.
We would like other events as well but we do require assistance in organising, promoting and helping on the events to ensure that the load is spread beyond the usual individuals who give so much of their time to the club. This new blood will invigorate the events and the club and provide an extra dynamism that is required for the overall health of the club.

    PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SOCIAL EVENTS

Club Open Day 2012

This year’s went well but we could have had more participating in the day's events. We’ll learn from this and we can do better with more planning for next year’s event!! We want the CLUB OPEN DAY 2012 to be bigger and have more events and attractions and we’d like it to be a complete day that we look forward to being THE EVENT that we look forward to not just this year but every year.
We’d like to form a specific Open Day Task Force to put in place the plans now to make it a lot easier to plan over the whole of the coming season. The central feature will be another Charity Match but we’d like it to be an event that emphasises our place in the community and can be a part of our recruitment plans.

Emphasis on youth

We actually do practise what we preach as we have a good track record of involving our younger members in club activities, not just on the playing side.
We have Alastair O’Gara, Aiden Wood, Luke Kirkbright, Jamie Owens and Matt Pickles who currently help with coaching junior teams and we know that we have others who have expressed an interest in helping, too. This is a great help on the coaching side and the lads will get something worthwhile from their efforts and will go along way to help bind the club together. The policy of investing time and effort in our youth policy will continue to bear fruit; we really appreciate this.
All of our websites have been designed and maintained by Alexander Ball, a former Junior player, and the new site should work well and serve all club members throughout the new season, now that we have overcome the teething problems.

New sponsors for tags help the club build for the future

Castleford RUFC have been helped by the generosity of a Glasshoughton based company, SysServers/Scada, to buy new kit for their ever-growing Tag Under 8 rugby squad. This welcome investment comes at a time when the club are investing in their youth players by helping them in their rugby coaching careers.
Before their away fixture at Huddersfield YMCA on Sunday 9 October, the team were presented with their new kit by SysServers/Scada’s Managing Director, Dean Wright, and Company Secretary, Gail Brown. The new sponsors were treated to a great performance in their first away fixture of the season. Dean said that he wanted to recognise the hard work undertaken by the Junior Section’s new coaches, players and parents and added "These are very exciting times for the club. There is a real buzz about the place and everyone at the club is committed to moving things forward. I wanted to do my bit to help and we were only to pleased to help out when we found that they’d grown out of the last shirts”.
This season 3 new assistant coaches from the club’s current and former Under 17 ranks, Jamie Owens, Josh Rolfe and Alistair O’Gara have joined Tag head coach, Ruth Lee, to help coach the eager and willing-to-learn youngsters on Wednesdays’ training nights and Sundays’ matches. The club will fund their necessary coaching courses as they progress up the coaching ranks. Ruth said of her assistants “They are a great set of lads. They have been great and can really relate to the youngsters in the Tag squad. Our club gives opportunities to players to do more than just play rugby. This is a good news story and we don’t hear enough about what kids do that is good for others”. Jamie replied “Ruth is great with the little ones. I think we are learning from her how to be patient. It is great to see that the kids are responding well to us as assistant coaches.” Alistair added “The club helped me get my Rugby Referee badge and it is great that they are supporting us get our coaching qualifications”.

We need to have information beforehand though to get the night off to a great start.
There will be 8 races and so we’ll need 8 sponsors, 1 for each race; they’ll have the chance to be entered into the sponsors’ prize draw. They’ll be able to name the race concerned.
In each race we’ll need 8 owners of the pigs who can name their pig. The owners will have the chance of winning prizes and can bask in the limelight for a short while (until the next race).
Betting on the pigs will be on a Tote system - sorry but only adults can place bets on the races but of course children are welcome and encouraged to come and enjoy the whole night.
This will be a great night but we need your entries beforehand so that we can make out the scorecard – so that you can study form and pick the pig that you want to win – and bring the bacon home!
Food will be hot pork sandwiches with all the trimmings.
Please see Gerald Kirkbright to give your names for sponsors and owners.

RFUW Northern Counties Festival success

This was a very successful day for the club and it was truly a festival of rugby. It was a great advertisement for girls rugby and our girls (3 in U15 and 3 in U18) were in there and were not just making up numbers, too. They have put the effort in and were excellent representatives for the club and deserve the praise that was given. We wish them continued success with their rugby and we hope that the insight gained from rugby at a higher level will help in the development of our own squads.
Everyone concerned with getting the new changing rooms ready deserves our gratitude as they looked superb: thanks for all your efforts.
Thanks to everyone who helped in the week or so beforehand to enable the event to take place in the first instance and the effort that we had in the few days before the weekend has been great. However, overwhelming though was the support on the day to get everything just so. With around 200 girls from the combined sides of Cheshire/Cumbria/Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire playing and the supporters we were able to host a fantastic day. We have received thanks from outside the club: "Fantastic job"..."What a turn out! Well done CRUFC".."Thank you for the day - it was excellent and such a great atmosphere. Many thanks to all at Castleford"....."A massive thank you for the effort everyone gave at Castleford RUFC - the festival in itself was a huge success." ...."What a great job you all did down at Castleford yesterday! I heard a number comments from both the girls and parents who either a) loved the new changing rooms b) were impressed with the organisation!"
You can't buy such PR so everyone should be proud of our club.
There are photographs to chronicle the day available on our Photographs page and Other links page and also by clicking on the title of this news item (now worked out how this is done!) Thanks to Jacqui O'Gara for her work taking the photos and then editing the album.
Lancashire may have won both the U15 and U18 tournaments but the main winner was the spirit of rugby in a club that puts playing the game as first priority.

We have been remiss in not mentioning Chris's departure from the club. For personal reasons Chris has not been able to devote as much time as he has in previous seasons and it was by mutual consent that he left his post as Director Of Rugby. The club has thanked Chris for the work that he has done and we should not forget the successive promotions and the trip to Twickenham. We wish him well for the future.

Castleford Girls fit for purpose

On Saturday 19 November a team of 8 members of Castleford RUFC Girls joined in the Crossfit Challenge to help a team from their sponsors, Blacks Solicitors, raise money for their designated charity, The Northumberland Air Ambulance. The girls wanted to show their appreciation for the sponsorship of kit by accepting the request to lend their help in completing the keep fit challenge of 1000 press ups, 1000 sit ups, 1000 squats, 1000 burpees and 1000 kettle bell swings. It was a gruelling event but they rose magnificently to the challenge and they completed their allotted share of the total target. The whole amount raised by Blacks through the event was over £2000. The girls were a credit to themselves and the club and the help with this was much appreciated.
There is a link to the WY Sport website: click on the headline for this article and you'll get there.

Castleford Young Guns Seek New Stars

Not content with an unprecedented number of Castleford RUFC's Under-14s having been called up for county duty with Central Yorkshire, the team's focus is on next year's Yorkshire Cup! The search is on for players to join this very talented squad.
Out of the small but talented pool of players trained by Head Coach, John Gott, no less than eight have been chosen for the Central Yorkshire squad this season. This has been a great boost for a dynamic team but they do not wish to rest on their laurels.
Team manager, Mark Grattan, believes that introducing new blood into the squad is critical to ensure the continued development of the team. He has said, “We take youth rugby very seriously and have big ambitions. Our recent £280,000 investment into new club facilities is proof of this but, more importantly, to understand how far we’ve come in such a short time you have to look at this team’s spirit. These young lads are passionate about this sport and their club and everyone is fully committed in the drive to achieve something historic in youth rugby. To build on these great foundations and continue the momentum achieved so far, we are looking for youngsters who love the game and want to join us on this great journey.”
Anyone interested in finding out more about the team and the club should contact Amanda on 07709 591108.

Meg's success

The whole of Castleford RUFC is celebrating the success of our Girls’ U15 Captain, Megan Owens, in being invited to the North of England Divisional U15 trial programme on 22 January 2012 at Bradford.

Megan, who has been at the club from a tot, has impressed the talent spotters during her performances for the Yorkshire RFUW U15’s team this season and the call to the Divisional level is reward for her efforts on the rugby field and in training. Castleford born and bred, a year 10 pupil at Castleford Academy, a supporter of the Tigers, and so Castleford through and through, Megan has emphasised how rich a vein of rugby talent there is at the Academy and the Rugby Union club, where her grandfather played and her uncle and father and two brothers still play, and her mother and auntie are mainstays of the volunteer catering and her grandma totes a mighty mop.

Her coach, Steve Ball has said about Megan’s achievement “I’ve known Megan for a number of years and she was voted Players’ Player of the Year last season but this year she has become more determined and this has paid its dividends. I see no reason why she cannot make progress even beyond the North of England Divisional level if her talent is nurtured and she is encouraged to fulfil her undoubted potential. She has grown in confidence and I hope her success inspires other pupils and team mates to see what rugby can offer and to seek representative honours themselves, too”.

Castleford Academy encourage girls to take up and maintain their interest in sport and Castleford RUFC is actively searching for girls from school years 6 and 7 to join their U13, years 8, 9 and 10 for their U15 and years 11, 12 and 13 for the U18 girls’ rugby squads. The club’s recruitment drive emphasises the benefits of being a member of a club with true family values. Steve Ball adds, “Our girls have made new friends beyond their own school. Many of them have other family members associated with the club but we want to broaden our player base and we will provide a warm welcome to all who fancy playing; from absolute beginners to experienced players. Our investment in the infrastructure of the club, with new changing rooms, shows our commitment to provide facilities for our young players and I’m particularly interested in showing how girls can enjoy their sport in an environment that is friendly and encourages participation; we can encourage many more like Megan to succeed."

Guidance on Adults (coaches, parents, spectators) entering the field of play

Fresh guidance (albeit the guidance much the same as standing instructions) has been issued and it can be viewed in deatil by following the link from the title of this item. However, the key points are coaches, parents and spectators should not get involved in incidents on the pitch, even if their intentions are entirely honourable
Their involvement often results in an escalation with adults from the other side deciding to respond and get involved themselves and too often this leads to confrontations between adults taking place in front of young players, to whom good examples should be set.
Apparently already this season a number of coaches and spectators have been charged with offences linked to going onto the field of play and this is the reaon John Sheppard has updated and reissued this advice.

Then we’ll have an official cutting of the ribbon/unveiling of the plaque and declaring the refurbished clubhouse and new changing rooms officially open.
There would be a lunch (which will probably be a buffet) for guests followed by curtain raisers including as many junior teams as we can and then at 3 o'clock a match between our seniors and Cutsyke ARLFC on the basis of one half being played on an RL basis and the other on an RU basis.
We hope that the guest of honour (TBC) will provide an immense amount of interest and will be a shot in the arm for the club’s programme aiming to develop rugby from junior to senior level and to have our own home-grown players come through the ranks (as they have been doing now for this and last season).

CASTLEFORD RUFC: COACHES REQUIRED FOR LADIES TEAM

Castleford RUFC wish to set up a ladies (Over 19s) rugby team.
The support and encouragement to continue with sport is often lacking once girls have left school and we consider that whilst women’s rugby has gone from strength to strength over recent years and nationwide participation is currently at an all time high there is little local provision and we can help plug that gap.
We want absolute beginners and experienced players to come down to the club and everyone is encouraged to bring a friend. We wish to attract ladies who want to enjoy their sport as well as the social side of being a member of a club.
We would like to recruit 2 coaches to help deliver this aim.
Roles & Responsibilities

Plan and organise sessions; Lead and/or assist with a variety of coaching sessions; Help develop the club’s profile for ladies via media and the web
Requirements
RFU Level 1 qualification desirable; Committed; Excellent communication skills
Commitment
Various days and evenings are available but it is likely that training will be on Wednesday evenings and training and matches on Sundays.
There is an advertisement on the WYS website viewable via the link on the title of this news item.

Cas gives thumbs up to Lancaster

Stuart Lancaster, England’s Interim Head Coach, was at Castleford RUFC today with West Park Leeds’s U11 team. However, you’d never have known this as any hype or entourage are not for him. He is quiet and unassuming and he took requests to be photographed with our teams in good spirit and with a willingness and self deprecating humour. He has not forgotten his rugby roots.
We hope that he gets the England job on a full time basis following his interview on Thursday.
Two nice photos are on the photographs page of this website.
I enclose 2 photographs of Stuart with Castleford RUFC’s U11 and U12 teams.

Shaping the Game pilot U7 - U10

This is the latest news on the Shaping the Game (StG) pilot which is running in 6 CBs across the country. It is a combination of messages from Alan Moses (Coach and Player Development Officer) and John Sheppard (CSO).
Season 2012/13 will see both Durham and Notts, Lincs & Derby involved which will mean Yorkshire clubs will potentially encounter this trial version of the game should they travel into those CBs to play. The expectation is travelling teams will play the StG rules if they visit a participating CB at U7- U10 age groups. We are encouraged when travelling out of Yorkshire to contact the clubs involved to discuss the rule changes beforehand.
The leaflet which has a link to it is for coaches/parents/players is a summary ; there are rules sheets in more detail for coaches and referees.
It does not look as if the nationwide launch of Shaping the Game will take place next season but those in the know remain convinced that it is on its way.

Social and Other Events Calendar

This is a pretty busy time and so there will be notices in the club and on The Club page of the website plus there is a separate pdf downloadable from the heading to this article.
Please pass on the message to others in your teams/squads/your family/friends and mark your calendars/fridges etc. Never more do we need to utilise the club’s facilities and we encourage everyone to come to the social events. Your club does need you to support the events.
Please (a big please) come and lend a hand at the Car Boot Sales – the band of diehard helpers is getting older and smaller in number and we need help on 4 days that are so important to the prosperity of the club and the ability to keep the club on an even keel financially; if you come for a couple of hours this will help.

Cas U15 Girls win trophy

The U15 girls were victorious in the Keswick Girls Tournament on Sunday 15 April. The squad of Megan, Liane, Abbie, Chelsea, Vicky and Emma are to be congratulated. A stunning victory in a stunning setting.
The U18 were hit by a number of injuries on the day leading to 2 girls, Lucy and Hannah G, going by ambulance to Carlisle, and Hannah M going to PGI the next day. Fortunately, nothing was broken but the serious sprains will take some time to mend: we wish them well. Rachael, Louise and Laura acquitted themselves well as the last 3 members standing in the invitation Barbarians' side against Keswick to round off the tournament. Well done everyone in trying circumstances.
A match report (or medical update) can be found by the link from the title of this article.

Sat 28 April - cancellation due to weather

We’re hoping that the message has got round already that with a heavy heart and much regret we’ve had to make the hard decision to cancel Saturday’s events at Castleford RUFC.
The pitches and surrounding areas are waterlogged and some areas are under a degree of water. There is no way that the pitches can dry out to make it safe to play on Saturday – safety of the players is paramount as the pitches are unplayable. We have cancelled Saturday as a whole but we are seeking to rearrange the day pretty soon if we can. Please keep an eye out for announcements.
