AGM 19 May 2008

This year’s AGM is on Monday 19 May and the required notices have been put up in the club. It will start at 7.30. Please attend if you can and add your contribution. It is your chance to have your say on your club’s future.

Captains and Presidents Boards  -  a great success

As a prelude to magnificent result against Baildon the new Captains and Presidents Boards were unveiled to a packed clubhouse. We were treated to a reminder of times past by Rowley Stephens and many old faces were in attendance at a nice ceremony to mark this occasion.

Juniors’ Presentation Day 27 April and 2007/8 Awards

This is normally a gloriously hot day so that we can have a fun day with games for parents outside but this year the festivities had to be curtailed by the weather. Nevertheless, we made the most of it and through what might have seemed mayhem we were able to steer a course to make the best of the day.

There was an atmosphere of excited anticipation as the club had a new departure of awards and trophies for Players’ Players of the Year and Coaches’ Most Improved Players. For those who like to keep stats the Role of Honour for Season 2007/8 reads as follows:

The awards for Players’ Players
U7 Andrew Frost
U8 Callum McLelland
U9 Toby Lumb
U10 Bradley Gott
U12 Chris O’Gara
U14 Ben Thompson
Most Improved Players awards
U7 Joseph Bugg
U8 Ben Hay
U9 Alex Buttery
U10 Anthony Brown
U12 Karl Del Rosario
U14 James Watson

Cas Sevens Competition

27 April was a packed day and fortunately the sun came out to keep the pitches playable for what was a great exhibition of Junior Rugby from the U14 teams that played in our (second) annual Sevens competition.

The increased fitness and strength of the players was the characteristic difference from the previous year; consequently it was very competitive but skill was to the fore. This would have graced any day and the message from many supporters was that rugby in Yorkshire is strong and if only some of the players on view are able to make it through to the senior sides then the future of many clubs will be bright.

We were joined by 2 teams each from Moortown, Doncaster and teams form Yarnbury, Bramley and a Barbarians side. Yarnbury were deserved winners, beating one of the Castleford sides in a closely fought final; the other Castleford side were deserved semi finalists.

Thanks to all those who took part, especially the referees, Mark Fisher and James Pickett from Castleford and the referee from Doncaster.

Club History updated

As he has time on his hands Bill Thackray has been able to put some thought to the thankless task of trying to document the club’s history. His article of post WWII escapades is on the History page. Thanks, Bill.

Car Boot Sales dates finalised

Bank Holiday Monday 26 May; Sunday 6 July and Bank Holiday Monday 25 August.

UNFORTUNATELY THE FIRST CAR BOOT SALE ON SUNDAY 20 APRIL HAD TO BE CANCELLED DUE TO POOR GROUND CONDITIONS. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE HAS BEEN SANCTIONED BY WMDC AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE DATE IN DUE COURSE.

Goole RFC and Wooden Spoon Charity

As a thank you for the kindness shown by Goole RFC this season we have decided to make a donation of sponsorship from the Junior Section of £50 for a good cause of their choosing.  Dave Walton (Wally) has played for Goole since he was six and still plays for the Goole first team now at thirty eight; his father Hugh, is the president of GRFC. Dave is embarking on a John O’Groats to Lands End bike ride to raise money for Wooden Spoon which is a rugby charity: for more details as to Wooden Spoon please check out their site www.woodenspoon.com.

If any member would like to contribute to the cause then the links to the Goole RFC site and details of the ride and sponsorship form are given below.

Girls Rugby at Cas

Girls U15 and ladies’ training sessions

We are well into the next phase of development for Castleford RUFC Junior Section; the establishment of a Girls` U15 squad. This is an ambitious venture and we must continue the hard work of trying to build up a squad. We are running sessions for Years 8, 9 and 10 girls for our U15 girls’ squad every Wednesday training night from now on.

We have also started up a small ladies group so if you know of anyone who is at school or college and is in Year 11 or above or any adult who wants to use this as a fitness group please tell them about this, too.

Please pass the word round at work and socially.

Ideally we want to establish a girls’ U15 squad (and then ultimately a full ladies’ team). We are ideally placed to be a focal point for the Five Towns. This is a major part of the development programme for our club and we are actively seeking help in finding

y Coaches and assistant coaches

y Players

y Assistance with administration – ability and enthusiasm needed

y Publicity and recruitment - vision and commitment needed

We need to recruit girls for an U15 squad from local schools or farther afield. We welcome all-comers, whatever the skill level or experience. We are confident that we will be able to build a squad if we can get the girls down.

This is an ambitious project and will have the full support of the whole club and we have secured funds for kit, equipment and coach training. We’d like people who would want to be a part of the decision making stepping forward and getting involved right from the start.

The RFUW under 15 Age band includes all girls who are U13, U14 and U15, so this includes years 8, 9 and 10 girls and this is what we are aiming for – an U15 Girls’ squad.

The RFU and RFUW will assist and we have also been chosen as a venue for a joint RFU/RFUW Road show for girls’ rugby; more details will follow very shortly so stay tuned.

Please contact Steve Ball (0778 5968254) or email us at info@castlefordrufc.org

RFU LINKS

RFU issues SIX NATIONS tickets warning

The RFU has warned fans of the dangers of buying or reselling tickets through unofficial channels as this year's RBS 6 Nations tickets are mailed out. Ticket terms and conditions prevent anyone from advertising tickets for resale and the RFU regularly monitors websites like eBay.  Any tickets found on this and other auction websites will be cancelled without refund and sanctions can be imposed.

Fans buying from unofficial sources also risk paying for forged, stolen or cancelled tickets which will result in them being refused entry to the stadium and leave them out of pocket.

To date 124 clubs, constituent bodies, schools and individuals have been penalised for contravening ticket terms and conditions, with sanctions ranging from a suspended 10 per cent reduction in entitlement to a four year total ticket ban.

In order to reduce the number of tickets sold on the black market and protect rugby fans from unscrupulous dealers, RFU affiliated clubs may only sell tickets to official operators, Mike Burton, Events International and Sportingclass. These operators pay the RFU royalties that are put back into the sport.  Clubs are not allowed to sell tickets to any other operator.

If ticketholders are unable to make it to the match, the returns policy enables them to get a refund if returning their tickets at least 48 hours before a match.  These returned tickets are then passed on to genuine supporters via ERSC, the England Rugby Supporters Club.

Experimental Law Variations (ELVs)

This month has seen the start of the Super 14 competition, which will incorporate some of the ELVs developed by the iRB Laws Project Group (LPG).  In addition, the Australian and South African Rugby Unions will be utilising all of the ELVs developed by the LPG in certain domestic competitions.  Descriptions of the ELVs can be found at www.rfu.com/referee

The RFU would like to encourage feedback on the ELVs and, in particular, the effect implementation might have on the Community Game.  An ELV Forum, which can be accessed at www.rfu.com/referee  has therefore been created to enable comments to be made. Prior to providing feedback, it is possbile to view video clips from the iRB which may offer further clarification.

The clips and explanatory notes can also be found at
www.rfu.com/referee.   You may also feedback to Richard Glynne-Jones, Referee Manager, at richardglynne-jones@rfu.com

Players’ health

The Health area of the community rugby website has recently been updated with guidelines on the management of concussion injuries including how to spot the signs and symptoms of concussion. Failure to assess, evaluate and manage a player with a concussion can have serious adverse consequences, particularly allowing a player with concussion to continue to play, or to return too early to training or playing.

The  website www.rfu.com/health also contains information about first aid training, advice about playing rugby with asthma, and answers to a selection of the frequently asked questions that we receive through our advice line.

New Rules and Regulations

The Rugby Football Union has launched a new online resource to make the game's rules and regulations more easily accessible to all.

The website www.rfu.com/regulations is now live and is the definitive central resource for rugby's rules and regulations in England.

As well as a new design, improved functionality such as the glossary tool allows users to find out more about any terms that aren’t clear. The site also aims to give a comprehensive view of regulations through context-related downloads and links to further information.

Coaching Resources: RFU Technical Journal

The Technical Journal (www.rfu.com/tj) is a free online publication for anybody who is interested in rugby coaching ideas.

There is a weekly article each Tuesday and the previous pieces are stored in the archive
. The authors are from a wide range of interests and rugby ability. There are pieces by top international coaches, Academies, foreign coaches, RRDMs, RDOs, referees, administrators, national journalists, fitness experts, sport psychologists, experts in other sports, players, students and parents of mini/midi players.

The editor, Keith Richardson, can be contacted at
Keithrichardson@therfu.com if you have any comments on the Journal.  Technical Journal Archive

2008 Prohibited substances list

The RFU would like to remind all constituent bodies, clubs, players and coaching staff that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2008 Prohibited List came into effect on the 1st January 2008. The 2008 List replaced the 2007 List and outlines the classes of substances and methods that are banned in sport, including rugby union.

The 2008 List is available for download together with a summary of the major changes at www.rfu.com/antidoping. It is particularly important to remember that:

(a) the RFU can test any player, anytime, anywhere
(b) the principle of strict liability applies to all players, meaning they are solely responsible for any prohibited substance found in their body, irrespective of whether the player intentionally or unintentionally used the substance.
(c) Players should take extra care to re-check the status of any substances they may be taking; particularly medications and they can do this by logging on to the Drug Information Database at
www.didglobal.com.

For further information please contact RFU Anti-Doping Officer, Gavin Dovey via email on gavindovey@rfu.com or telephone on 020 8831 7441.

Go Play Rugby

We promote our club as the CLUB to join and the place where all can GO PLAY RUGBY

This campaign will remain “on the go” throughout this season.

The campaign remains in place to remind former players what rugby offers, what they are missing and how they can get back to playing the game. It is aimed at those who have "played but lapsed" due to other pressures of family life and work commitments.

To see video links from the dedicated GO PLAY RUGBY website click on the links below and you can see an interview with Rob Andrew and a promotional item to whet the appetite for who have “played but strayed” and are looking for a place to renew their acquaintances with the game and like minded players.

Going up and up…reflections on the season (so far)

With promotion now achieved we can look back at a season where the club has been put right back on track.

The recruitment of last summer has not just come up trumps but has forged friendships that will last forever.

The forward unit has been awesome and it has it has been an honour and a privilege to lead this unit; Jonno and Stu Whybrow have had a massive effect on everyone around them. Mick Huby has had another great season and his commitment and passion for the game set a great example for the rest of the team. Gareth Paul has started to live up to what Jonno and I expected from him at the beginning of the season. Niam, Paul Connell and Bri Wilson have been massive in the line out and have all earned the right to be in a successful team.

The back row of Simon and Andy has been truly legendary. Their attitude and resilience has been superb. Brad and Stuart Morley have come into the team quite late on but have still had an impact in every game.

The back line has been great but there is still a lot to com and all have committed to another great year, next year. Danny and Jason have been great in the centre; Lee, Craig, and Johnny have been fantastic on the wing and have shown a good attitude when asked to sit on the bench. Paul Philpott has been truly awesome at full back and some of his last ditch tackles had to be seen, to be believed!

Mikey and Gary have had a great season; Gary has struggled with his knee for some time, but he has vowed to get right for next year whereas Mikey has stepped in and laid his claim to the 9 shirt - a position which he will be better suited, until the years add some skin to his bones.

I suppose I should mention our number 10; however, working on the fact that, if he had kicked from the beginning of the season, we would have gone up as champions about 150 points clear on points difference!! He shall stay rudely anonymous! BLIP!!

My final mention and massive thank you goes to Richard Davies whose commitment to the Cougars has kept the first team honest and given a great team ethic to the fringe players. Without the Cougars, the 1st XV would not have achieved what we have. Thanks Rich!!

Gary Fisher has done a great job with the 3rd team, who have improved massively as the season has gone on, culminating in a winning sequence of 5 games. Well done boys!

We can now look forward to the  trip to Twickenham.  We have earned the right to play in this massive game due to our commitment throughout the season. When even the birth of a small tribe, couldn’t keep the boys away on a Saturday afternoon, this is a measure of what it means to represent Castleford RUFC.

And we look forward, with relish to the same great times, next year! Chris Willett
